Geography
SUBJECT OVERVIEW
“Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?”
Sir Michael Palin
Geography is an engaging subject that helps students make sense of the world by exploring the relationships between people, places and environments. Through the study of physical and human geography, students gain an understanding of global challenges, environmental issues and cultural diversity. Alongside subject knowledge, students develop valuable skills in fieldwork, data analysis, interpretation and problem-solving, preparing them for further study and a wide range of future careers.
Key Aims of the Department
- Develop geographical knowledge and understanding of places, environments and global issues.
- Build critical thinking and enquiry skills through the analysis of geographical evidence and data.
- Promote environmental responsibility and awareness of sustainability challenges.
- Encourage global citizenship through an understanding of diverse cultures and interconnected societies.
CURRICULUM INFORMATION
Curriculum Intent
We believe Geography helps students understand both the human and natural processes that shape our world. Through the exploration of places, environments and contemporary issues, students develop a sense of curiosity about the world and their place within it. The curriculum fosters enquiry, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling students to investigate real-world issues, evaluate different perspectives and make informed judgements. Through this, students gain a deeper understanding of people, cultures, environments and the connections between them.
Curriculum Structure (KS3 and KS4)
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
All students study a broad and balanced curriculum across both Physical and Human Geography. Students explore their local area alongside national and global themes, helping them develop an understanding of the world at a range of scales. Learning is supported through independent, paired and collaborative activities, as well as opportunities for fieldwork that bring geographical concepts to life.
In Year 7, students investigate how people are connected to places and environments. They study natural hazards, examining both their causes and impacts, while developing core geographical skills such as map interpretation and data analysis.
In Years 8 and 9, students build on this foundation by exploring topics such as climate change, industry and development. They investigate issues of inequality and sustainability, evaluating different viewpoints and considering possible solutions before reaching their own conclusions.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)
Students follow the AQA GCSE Geography course, building on the knowledge and skills developed at Key Stage 3. The course explores the physical and human processes that shape our world through topics including natural hazards, ecosystems, urban change, economic development and resource management. Students also develop essential geographical skills through fieldwork, data interpretation and decision-making, preparing them for further study and active participation in society.
ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
Students’ progress is assessed through a range of formative and summative methods, including regular knowledge checks, low-stakes quizzes, midpoint exam-style questions and endpoint assessments. Feedback is provided through verbal discussion, whole-class feedback and written comments, enabling students to identify misconceptions, reflect on their learning and make continued progress.
ENRICHMENT AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES
We offer a variety of enrichment opportunities, including homework and revision support, targeted GCSE intervention sessions and fieldwork experiences. These activities help deepen geographical understanding, build confidence and enhance learning beyond the classroom.
